A review of the recent literature reveals an increase in the application of herbal extracts for the treatment of periodontal disease. 4% Garcinia mangostana L, known also as the mangosteen tree has been studied extensively for its anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. However, there are very few scientific reports on the application of these properties for the treatment of periodontal disease.The aim of the present study was to evaluate the anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties effects of Garcinia mangostana (GM) L. pericarp gel when used adjunctively in the treatment of chronic periodontitis patients.
